The Foundation International Research School of Planetary Sciences and Leonardo, are pleased to announce the first edition of the International Summer School in Earth Observation, to be held at the Fucino Space Centre, Italy, from 6 to 10 July 2026.

The Summer School is aimed at students, early-career researchers, young professionals and scientists interested in Earth Observation, satellite data, remote sensing applications and space-based monitoring of the Earth system.
Through lectures, hands-on sessions and dedicated training activities, participants will explore the use of Earth Observation technologies and data for scientific, environmental and applied purposes.

Only complete applications, including the proof of payment and CV, will be considered.

Activities will take place daily from 09:00 to 17:00.

Each day includes morning and afternoon sessions, combining lectures, software training, real-world dataset applications and discussion with experts from the Earth Observation sector.

PARTECIPATION AND CANCELLATION POLICY

The Summer School is open to a maximum of 28 participants and will be activated with a minimum of 10 registered participants by 21 June 2026.

Partecipants are required to bring their own laptop computers for the practical sessions and hands-on activities.

Cancellation and refund policy

If the minimum number of participants is not reached the Summer School will be cancelled and all registration fees will be fully refunded. After confirmation of the Summer School, voluntary cancellations will be subject to the following refund policy:

    • Until 21 June 2026: full refund
    • From 22 to 28 June 2026: 50% refund
    • From 29 June 2026 onwards: no refund

REGISTRATION FEES:

The registration fee includes:

  • participation in the entire Summer School;
  • hotel accommodation with half board at Hotel Filippone, Avezzano, Italy;
  • shuttle service between Hotel Filippone and the Fucino Space Centre in the morning and in the afternoon; 
  • shuttle services between Avezzano bus station and Hotel Filippone on 5 July and 10 July;
  • lunches and coffee breaks.

APPLICATION REVIEW AND ADMISSION

Submission of an application does not automatically guarantee admission to the Summer School. All applications will be reviewed by the Organising Committee in order to assess the eligibility and suitability of applicants with respect to the objectives, level and format of the programme.

Applications may be assessed on the basis of the applicant’s curriculum vitae, academic and/or professional background, motivation, relevance of current studies or work activities to the topics of the Summer School, previous experience in Earth Observation, remote sensing, GIS, environmental monitoring, space technologies or related fields, and the expected benefit of participation.

The Organising Committee reserves the right to consider the overall composition of the class, with the aim of ensuring an appropriate balance of academic and professional profiles, career stages, disciplines, institutions and geographical backgrounds, while preserving the scientific, educational and logistical objectives of the Summer School. 

Admission may also be subject to organisational, logistical, security, access-control or compliance requirements connected with the hosting venue and the delivery of the programme. Any such requirements will be applied in a transparent, proportionate and non-discriminatory manner.

Admission decisions will be communicated by the Organising Committee and shall be considered final.

HOW TO REACH (transport)
 
The venue of the Summer School, Fucino Space Centre, is located in the Fucino plain in Abruzzo, near Avezzano.
 
The two major cities near Avezzano are Rome and Pescara, both of which can be easily reached by plane or train.
 
You can arrive in Rome by plane at:
  • Rome Fiumicino International Airport “Leonardo da Vinci”
  • Rome Ciampino Airport “G.B. Pastine”
or by train/bus at:
  • Rome Termini railway station
  • Rome Tiburtina bus station
You can arrive in Pescara by plane at:
  • Abruzzo International Airport “Pasquale Liberi”
or by train/bus at:
  • Pescara Centrale railway station
  • Pescara Centrale bus station
From either Rome or Pescara, the fastest, easiest, and most economical way to reach Fucino Space Centre is by the frequent coach/bus service.
 
A shuttles service to Hotel Filippone from the Avezzano bus station will be organised on July 5 and 10.
 
A shuttle service will be also organised to reach Fucino Space Centre in the morning and return to the hotel in the afternoon.
 
Details about the bus and shuttle services will be provided to the registered participants.
